The clipboard has stopped working on my work computer; or rather, it's intermittent. For example, I needed to copy something from a .pdf to a website I was building with a CMS. Nothing. Another example, I needed to copy an image from the web into Photoshop. Nothing.

I've done a web search and most of what I found concerned MS Word and Works. I do use Word, but not that often. Also, this is a new problem. Any ideas?

What OS are you using? Even different versions handle the clipboard in different ways. For copying to Photoshop, consider downloading the image first, and then opening it from where you saved it to.

This almost sounds like some type of malware. Scan your system for viruses and then for spyware, preferably using more than one scanner for each class of malware. You may have to play install/uninstall games to avoid clashes among those tools. Tedious, but do-able.

Locke--that's what I've been doing, but I copy so many things back and forth in the course of a day that saving things like that does nothing but clutter up the hard drive, because I'll likely use whatever it is one time, save the end result and be done.

MWD--my work computer is running XP. I'm also at a college that has mucho software in place to prevent exactly what you're talking about. I'll see about doing a scan, though.

You don't have to keep what you download. I'm a graphic design major - I'm constantly downloading images that i'll only use once. I download them to my desktop, drag 'em over into Photoshop, and delete them the second they're in.

Clean & easy.

re: malware - I agree, this might be a possibility. Try using Lavasoft's AdAware if you don't have anything similar already. You should be able to find a free copy from the good old days when it was still free - they still give updates for it for free, I believe.

Forgot to mention, don't rathole yourself on this problem. Consider a rebuild from the factory recovery CD if you're not seeing daylight in 2-3 hours of hands-on. That is, if you're the owner of the computer. If the school owns it, toss the problem over to them and let them deal with it.

"See about doing a scan" leads me to believe this would be an exception case for you. Not good. Scans should be done every day for systems that are always on, and the reports should be examined every day. Only a small minority of infections can be caught before they actually occur; this is why scans are mandatory. Does the anti-malware software the school provides check for both viruses and spyware? Who gets the reports? Does anyone even look at them? I'm trying to get a sense of where the "point of demarcation for responsibility" lies in your situation.

Our ITS division handles all of this and I've alerted them that I have a problem and they are checking into it. They do scans everyday and they have all kinds of software in place to prevent these sorts of things.

The "see about doing a scan" was because my old job had a similar set-up, but you could scan your individual computer as well if you had a problem. That doesn't seem to be the case here.
