Hey, y'all. I have a question. I had pondered putting this in the college/career folder, but my question really pertains more to finances, and I'm looking for a more serious answer. In August, I should graduate with a Master's degree, but it's in a field that has relatively low pay and not one that will bring riches or bonuses. I expect that I will have to do extra work on the side, but some options seem to be a lot of work for little return. I still have a few years to take risks with my finances, but my parents are aging and after the recent economic downturn, I decided I would try to help them out financially if I'm able. What are some options for making extra money using this credential? What opportunities have the best return for the amount of time put into them? For example, I heard that writing is relatively low pay, and teaching workshops... well... the one I considered required me to pay my own way there and the benefit was free admission to the conference.

In what area is your masters degree? I can think of several things outside a 9 to 5 job that one could do for extra $$.

My Master's is in Mental Health Counseling. I'm definitely interested in Biblical Counseling as well as other areas such as Gerontological counseling, child & family counseling, and a few other areas. Prevention is a huge area right now and one I would like to focus on. I would love to hear what ideas you may have.

Hey, you could be the future Dr. Laura with your own radio show! Kind teasing you, but am also serious. Look to other family and marriage counselors like her, who have become VERY successful, as a mentor. Read their books and mimic them. In the mean time, look for contracting opportunities with the VA on FBO.gov. Being in the military can be tough, many families will need a lot of support and counseling now and in the future. Also might check with area hospitals to see if they have any contracting opportunities. They may not have room in the budget for an employee, but you could start a practice as a contractor. Same for schools and churches, we have a big need in our area for specialist who can work with autistic kids. I'm sure I'll think of more later, but I'm tired and am heading to bed.
