I'm not sure where to post this.

I am just wondering what kind of essential points to include in a testimony. I don't think I'll be writing one of my entire Christian life, or even my conversion experience, but rather, a shorter one (for telling in church) of a particular time or event in my life that exercised my faith.

It is too bad that you are not willing to include testimony about your life or salvation, because these are truly some of the greatest testimonies there are. Any testimony will present a problem or a struggle that you faced, and will show how God worked it out in your life. It almost always includes a deliverance of some sort, so that is an essential element of any testimony. It is always something that you can not do on your own, so it has to be something supernatural, such as salvation is supernatural.

Why even write one at all. The Lord will give you the words to say when He wants you to share a story. This has always been true for me.

About 1 1/2 yrs ago I had planned on going to church, (mind you my son is a baby) I could not sleep and I tossed and turned for this one story to repeat itself, over and over.
Finally I yelled, Come on enough, You know I am grumpy in the morning!
I did finally dozed off, but morning came too soon. I got up, got my son dressed and waited for my husband.
Well baby fell asleep, hubby didn't want to go, so I left both at home. As I walked to church (it was nearby) the same story was playing again, over and over. Lo and behold when I got to church it happened to be Testimony day. That's when I realized that He was preparing me on what to say. It was truly awesome.
So if I were you I would not care about preparing anything, He will tell you what He wants you to say.

I'm always willing share my life and conversion experiences, but this is at a church where everyone has heard that part of my testimony before. :-) I think I will share my most recent test of faith: this whole year!

Maybe not everyone knows your testimony. There could ver well be new attenders there. Besides, to speak of your conversion and how you got saved isnt something that people dont want hear about. God Bless

Everyone here has extremely strong points for you to consider. The one i agree strongly with is, there could be a guest who hasn't heard it. You truly need to realize that your testimony, no matter how many times others have heard it, defines you and the relationship that was created with our wonderful and amazing Lord.
Don't abandon your true testimony, it's what makes you special with God and He love hearing it everytime you share it.

God bless and goodluck with your decision...

Excellent question, Nevaehs_gaze! Would you believe someone asked to hear my testimony just an hour ago? Gladly I gave it.

A good testimony can have three parts:

-what you were like before you got saved

- how you got saved (in a way that the listener could use to become a Christian, too)

- what you're like since you got saved (showing how your life changed)

Here's my testimony in a nutshell:

An abusive, neglectful family led me to live a DIY lifestyle because no one else was going to do good things for me. I was selfish, profane and immoral - just like most everyone else. I knew some Christians and thought they'd be perfect if they just weren't Jesus freaks.

But when I heard that I was a sinner I was offended - I'd never murdered anyone or robbed a bank. A godly roommate shared the Gospel with me, to no apparent effect. One day we were watching the news on TV and something about Israel come on, and she popped open her Bible and said, "See? It says right here that Israel would become a nation again, and it did in 1948, 1900 years after it was destroyed."

That really shook me. If the Bible was true, then I was in big trouble. I started going to church with her because I liked the singing, and I was getting some great Bible teaching. I heard that God was calling me, and no way was I going to respond to that.

One day I couldn't take it anymore and said, "OK, God, you win; I can't fight against you anymore. Thank You for forgiving my sin (whatever that means - beats me). You can be the Boss now."

Within 6 months, my life was totally different. The immoral lifestyle was gone, the profanity was gone, I was learning how to love others and about how God loved me. I was happier than I'd ever been before in my life.

It wasn't all easy - I developed all the symptoms of a fatal disease and had surgery. The people taking care of me knew me and were amazed I wasn't scared, but I knew that alive or dead I was His. Turns out, it was something benign.

My growth has been up and down, but God has been faithful throughout. The more I learn about Him, the better my life gets, and the more I read my Bible the more answers I find about how to live life. What a great life!

You all make good points! You're right... even if the people have heard my whole testimony several times, another time certainly wouldn't hurt. Just like Scripture readings - even if you've read it so much, you've memorized it, new things can still 'jump out' and touch you.

Just to clarify, I do plan on opening with my life before Christ, my conversion, and life after, but have the main focus be a specific aspect of my walk with the Lord, such as faith or perseverance. We (my husband and I) are each sharing our testimonies next Sunday, the 30th - we also have to play songs and Scripture readings for the day! The church is small, less than 20 people (I have yet to find a much larger church in this area of Japan).

Thanks for sharing yours, deermousie!

I wonder if there is a thread here just for sharing your testimonies?

Awesome! I am praying tonight that it will be a blessing to many and that God will move in hearts in response to it.

What takes you to Japan? I was there for a summer once with Campus Crusade for Christ (Ohio!) and got to share my faith a lot but didn't see any immediate fruit. May God bless it.

You're welcome. It would be good to hear how God has moved in other people's lives, since He is so creative.

We each wanted to go to Japan (I, because I have a heart for this country and people and have been here before, and he because he's studied the language and culture). Earlier this year, we got an offer from a school I had previously taught and decided now (right after getting married, and before kids) was the perfect time to go! So now, we're here teaching conversational English for the next two years.

I have many testimonies. Every day seems to bring another. My testimony of conversion is, by its nature, the most powerful for me, but the Lord tests me every day by allowing Satan to tempt me and each subsequent choice I make is another testimony.

Thanks, Gary. I feel the same way! There are many different occasions and seasons in my life I can use as a testimony to share with others - I think part of the difficult in this one is that there are too many to choose from. I just trust that God will give me the topic and words to speak, and open the ears and hearts of our listeners.

So true. At a church Thanksgiving Supper last Sunday we held for the town [free for all] I had the opportunity to give thanks for beating cancer. Later in the evening more than one person came to me and spoke to me about their own experiences with this beast. Most of them I hope to see again this Sunday at Services. We really connected, even though it was a simple giving of thanks that prompted this connection. One never knows when what one says will change/touch the hearts of others and bring them to salvation.

Just an update! It went well! We've had several people talk to us through this week about how they affected them. I even have an invitation to someone's house on Friday to discuss things more. I'm always happy to share stories of how God has worked in my life.
