I have a problem at work. I am a reporting analyst and work with databases, computer programming and build reports for various departments.

Last year I foresaw a need and started building a fairly complicated reporting system to show how well one of our departments is fulfilling its oblgations to other parts of our company. This report has evolved a little bit and is a very effective way to measure performance, and also diagnose and fix problems throughout some of our systems. The only bad part is it takes hours for it to run.

Fast forward about a year and I am working as an analyst in a new department. We had a recent round of layoffs and we need to start analyzing this department of our company. I thought that this reporting system could easily be configured to do so. It has taken a few days but I made another copy of the necessary files, did some reconfiguring, testing and a little bit of validating and almost have it finished. My boss and one of my coworkers are aware of this reporting system but I don't think that they fully understand what it is capable of doing. Our manager or my boss's boss, wants us to have something very soon. We had a meeting a couple days ago about how we are going to tackle this problem and I was extremely happy to see how my reporting system would fit in nicely. I mentioned that I am very close to having a solution to a big chunk of our problem but I got the impression that I was being ignored, especially when our manager handed off the whole project to one of my coworkers. At first I was a little discouraged that the whole thing was handed off to someone else. I really enjoy working with my coworker and have no hard feelings. This is an excellent chance for him to toot his horn.

I do not know what to do now. Should I try to further explain to my coworker and boss what I have so far and risk taking the wind out of their sails? I definitely think I should complete my report as a plan B so I can watch everybodies flank if we ever take some fire. I do not want to cause any fur to fly and I certainly don't want to take the wind out of someone's sails. This has been my preoccupation throughout the day. I think I could be getting a too tired or stressed and can't think straight. I can't help but think that I am a little too selfish, but this is really aggrivating that I practically have a solution and it was rejected.

Any Thoughts?

A couple of questions. When you said you saw a need for a more efficient way of doing something, did you run it by management before you started? Were they aware of what you were working on? Now that it has been implemented, are people using it?
