The Pastor at our evangelical church says women members cannot be Deacons, Elders, or Leaders of our church. He says our church leaders want to follow the Bible's way of not allowing women to be in those types of leadership roles. Our church just celebrated it's 40th anniversary and the current Pastor has been the minister for 20+ years. A committee of members reviewed our church's by-laws. They determined that our by-laws DO NOT specifically say that women cannot hold roles of Deacon, Elder, or Leader. And even though the committe determined this, our Pastor, Elders, and Deacons still will not allow women in these roles. (Perhaps they would if there was a mutiny.) Our pastor says that the Bible says women cannot be certain types of leaders, such as Deacons & Elders. However, if we didn't have some of the women we have now in the leadership roles they are in now (ministry directors, office manager, teachers, volunteers to coordinate, etc.), our church wouldn't function as well as it is. Where, in the Bible, does it say that women cannot be a Deacon, Elder, or be in other Leadership roles? Please provide specific verses. Thank you for your help. DS - a woman member

Well, there is at least one verse that says a deacon should be "the husband of but one wife" and that his home should be in good order. But if your church already has women serving as teachers, office managers, ministry directors and such, then surprise, they already have women in leadership roles, they just call it something different.

Yes, it's not very consistent, is it. Another member, who knows the Bible way better than me, says Paul spoke of a time when women were told to quit talking during a sermon. And that Paul was not referring that women should quit talking about how the church is run altogether, which is how some people misinterpret this story and take it out of context. The context of this story is that the women were speaking too loudly during the sermon and were asked to be quiet. I don't know where this story is in the Bible. If anyone knows, please tell me so I can read the story myself. And, of course, any other Bible verses that say women cannot be in leadership roles. Thanks again, DS

1 Corinthians 14:34-35 came to mind when you when reading your post. After reading it I'm not sure that it is the passage of scripture you are referring to, but have heard it is often misinterpreted. If I am incorrect, prayerfully someone will give you the correct passage of scripture...Charge the error to my mind, not my heart
