Thanks for the prayers...things are lining up quite nicely.

Today (6/21) is a needed test that will involve a heart catherer to determine what may be the cause & level of pressure on my lungs. On Wed. I met w/ the heart specialist and she was pleased so far w/ the holter & nuclear tests & sees no need to do further testing until 12 months from now. The valve problem is extremely minor-needing no special attention. Because my triglicerides are up though due to medication-she prescribed LOVAZA, which is simply a purified omega 3-fatty acid..fish oil..which is taken by alot of people as a helpful supplement.

This morning at 9 I will be at Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan for the catherer...and afterwards be in a recovery/monitoring stage w/ a friend from NJ coming to sign me out (required)...I am believing that this test too will determine that what's going on is nothing major. They want him to come between 12-1, but I'm believing that I will be fully recovered by 11-11:30am....and then treating my escort to lunch, or a movie & Tues. in honor of their birthday tickets to Ed Schultz' Town Hall in Manhattan (we're both died in the wool conservatives so that should be fun; Al Sharpton will be one of Ed's on-stage guests)

If that is the case-no big lung problem--I will be wrapping up some dental work..and then would seemingly be medically ok to move on to Pensacola. W/ the oil spill, extremely hot & humid months & hurricane season upon Fla...I'm not really in a rush at this point. Plus I may have some unfinished non-medical business that needs closure too.

However, again thanks for the prayers as today will involve invasive ambulatory surgery of sorts...& anything could happen. As always I'll be prayed up before I go..& have others praying.

Rick/ Ps. 118:17

Father I thank you for all you have done in Rick's life. I especially thank you that he is one of your own, having escaped the snares and lies of this world. I pray that today that this procedure will go smoothly and painlessly. I pray the rest of the day will be a wonderful day for Rick. Thank you Lord.

Thanks for the prayers.....

As readers know I've had a series of bad reports/possibilies turning good. The test on Monday was not as optimistic:

Took the catherer on Monday; two excellent drs. & 2 nurses tended to me. While starting the recovery room procedures/brief stay..the primary informed me that the tests showed that I had severe PULMONARY ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION....which affects the vessels that carry blood from the heart to the lungs..this impacts on the free flow of oxygen.

To make it simple-it's a form of high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. It's a possible outcome of one's liver disease.

She was to communicate w/ my liver & heart specialists; & I have an appt. w/ her boss Thursday afternoon.

She wants to treat it "aggressively", which would require my insurance to approve aTyvaso pump; an instrument similar to an asthma inhaler, but that needs to be refilled daily for four treatments a day where you inhale 3-9 breaths. She already began the paperwork.

In a short while Tyvaso could bring the pressure down to normal. Afterwards I could have the treatment cut down; or possibly (not clear on this) could simply take a pill. What happens though is because of my liver problem, certain meds might not be advisable.

Please continue praying....it's appreciated,

Rick/ Ps. 118:17

Another day another test....

Well, nothing wrong w/ being thorough.

Met yesterday w/ the Pulmonary specialist, he is turning over the case to the woman who did my catherer as she has alot of experience w/ this pulmonary disorder.

He did however want to check for possible clotting in my lungs prior to treatment (no word yet if insurance will reimburse meds by inhaler= $40,000 a year).

So I'll be back on my back getting tested this afternoon at 2pm....

I'm believing that there is no clotting in my lungs, or any parts of my heart & chest area.

PS- On Tuesday per James 5 I attended a healing service w/ the anointing w/ oil......

Finally, Jesus is the best physician on my line-up. Amen??????

Thank you for those prayers. ^^^I said the specialist was turning over my case to the woman who did my catherer...little did I know her credentials:+++

Pulmonary/Critical Care Attending
Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine
College of Physicians and Surgeons Columbia University
Director, Pulmonary Hypertension Program
St Luke’s/ Roosevelt Hospital Center

Everyone I talk to seems to know her. And, since using the specialists at St. Luke's/Roosevelt I have had two internationally known drs.; one was a pioneer.

That's why I worry a little about my tentative move to Pensacola; I plan on using the hospital where my sister-in-law used to supervise at the medical lab in Pensacola, & have held preliminary talks w/ both that hospital; & w/ Tulane University in New Orleans should I ever need a liver transplant (Praise God my #s are too low).

Anyhow she is still trying to get the inhaler improved, as they have asked for addl. information.

Also, I met w/ my PCP on Wed., last labs & all tests were reviewed as my "gate keeper" & she verified NO CLOTS in my lungs; and says I should be able to move in a few months after I get this new med approved, am on it a short while as a trial period--- & pending other feedback.

Thanks again,
Rick/ Ps. 118:17

Father,
Thank you for there being no clots. I ask that the move to Pensacola does not diminish the quality of medical care. Thank you for all that you are doing—the visible and the invisible. We pray for brooklynsblessed1 in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Problem getting lung meds - 7/14/2010 10:59:32 PM

Met today w/ my pulmonary specialist we have still not heard back from the insurance approval section to get the TYVASO*** inhaler approved; she contacted two depts. today & we're hoping that we'll hear shortly.
Once approved the med has to be shipped & then a nurse come to my home from 1-4 xs to see that I know how to load the ampules 1x a day; and then use every 4 hrs. during waking hours. We went over the catherer & nuclear tests and amazingly I do have Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension at present a severe case (I'm not using medical-but simple terms) but do not have the symptoms. Many folks at this stage might have tiredness, shortness of breath, weakness & literal interference w/ daily activities.
The upside is that any constriction of my arteries due to the increased blood pressure on my lungs could be reversed.
So I'm praying hard that this will get approved as I won't need to be tested until about 4 months into treatment & could concievably (barring side-effects or inability to tolerate) could have the test done after I move.
PS- I'm hoping to see my new great nephew Jaden-just born last week to a proud mom (my niece), dad & his 3 sisters in Va. by year's end. Maybe a big family reunion in Pensacola or New Orleans for the holidays (haven't had one in many, many, many years). But I need to finish this, & 1 or 2 other NY things & then I'm hopefully gone.

^^^ The lung med was delayed, & we just resolved it Fri. (reason unknown-I've seen the emails between drug co. & my dr); I am tentatively going to have the nurse show me how to assemble the inhaler, this Friday-she will bring the inhaler & spend time in my home.
She'll spend a couple hours to monitor my blood pressure, etc., & to check for diziness etc.
THIS IS ALL GREAT,FANTASTIC...."BUT":

The inhalers cost about $40,000 a year, in NY I have a secondary insurance and therefore a small copay in NY.

In Pensacola Fla. there is no guarantee that I could continue this 2nd insurance payment program, and the TYVASO inhaler ( www.tyvaso.com )would go up to a price that I could not afford.

And the oral med route (less effective) is still very expensive.

My hopes as I struggle w/ how long I might be "stuck" in NY (?) is that I can find a way to resolve this, although chances look slim.

My dillema is that in order to ever get on a liver transplant list...I have to have successful dropping of lung pressure; and because of the price differences am likely stuck in NYC, way beyond what I had wanted (just as my sister-in-law asked this week---when are you coming??????? And I had visions of having a friend help me pack.)

I'm more depressed than I've been all year;close long-time friends from out of the area are getting together w/ me in the next few days for support; & I'll be praying about it in church this weekend.

Thanks for the prayers,

Rick/ Ps.118:17

Father,

You know the challenges that Rick is now facing. Please work them all out beautifully and smoothly to your added honor and glory. I ask that you bless Rick with good reasons to be encouraged and that you help him to see those reasons. Thank you for being always faithful. I thank you and ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Thank you all so much.....

Today is the day that a nurse will come from NJ to my place at 11:30am to show me how to load up the vials in the TYVASO inhaler for the high blood pressure on my lungs; how to clean it & to stick around awhile to monitor my blood pressure.

I guess it's good that it's a Friday; so that if need be I can relax & not be in Manhattan in case I experience any side-effects (headache, nausea, throat irritation & pain, fainting or loss of consciousness & others---praying that I won't).

Ideally this will bring the pressure down, because if I ever needed a liver transplant it can't be high.

Anyhow, this slows my move to Pensacola; and that remains a bummer.

Rick/ Ps. 118:17

A few updates the nurse did come on the Fri. mentioned & I began w/ 3 breaths of TYVASO 4xs a day...she came again Tues. & raised it to 6 breaths. Next week we may go to the max of 9..my only side-effect is an occasional cough; she advised gargling afterwards which I will do.

I initially said the cost was $40,000 a year; change that to $18,000 a month-unreal-but because Pulmonary Hypertension on the Lungs is so rare---the cost is so high, & not headed towards generic in the near future.

Next week, I'm going to try & hustle to see if I can get it for the same copay in Fla..but so far no one will commit.

Yesterday I met w/ my PCP & Liver Specialist we reviewed my recent labs which were generally fine; my MELD (measurement to qualify for liver transplant-thank God is low-no need to place me on the transplant lists) it remains at 12---and if need be they will refer me to the pulmonary specialist at Mt. Sinai's liver transplant team. W/out the TYVASO working I would be ineligible for a transplant (another bummer).

I am guessing that if I am delayed for an undetermined time in moving, I'll discuss at least being w/ my family for Christmas.

I do believe in prayer and will get some more folks praying (ie Brooklyn Tabernacle+++ prays for 30 days by name & need-before I hired a person in the past, before that he & his wife were at the all night prayer band there, & she remembers me being prayed for as she worked w/ me at the youth shelter--of course one can remain anonymous or 1st name) & I have plenty of ministry & pastor friends from my coordinating them; & my old church's involvement w/ the homeless.

I am praying for healing and a breakthrough in finding the meds covered.

Rick/Ps. 118:17

Father,
We ask that you provide a way. Cause this illness, the expenses, the payment of medical bills—cause all of it to work out beautifully for Rick to your honor and glory. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
