I think the reason the term "porn" can be applied to horror films is because of images themselves. While porn is obviously about sex, it is ultimately image based, as all moving images are. Further, violence and sex in cinema and porn are spectacular images, similar in their explicit and over the top unrealistic nature. They are also similar because they depict the body: literally fragmented and chopped to pieces in horror, and visually fragmented through editing and camera angles (close ups etc) in porn.

There is an interesting torture like horror film called "Funny Games" by Michael Haneke, originally made in Austria in the 90's and remade with American actors, shot for shot, released this year under the same name. Besides being remarkably suspenseful, it seems to address the images themselves and our complicity in the consumption of the images.

For me, images are very special. If one is to make an explicit image, I hope that it is for reasons of truth and not for spectacular entertainment / money making power.

Apologies for going on and on. Before I go on expounding for pages, I'll wait and see if these ideas are interesting to any of you.

Hostel-
first half-soft core porn
second half-hard core torture

no plot, no real thought
I am not a type to yak about movies
but these movies are garbage-they are just...nothing
sex and torture
put on a dirty movie and 300 side by side and you'll get pretty much the same effect
(I liked 300 though lol)

I agree with one poster, the Hitchcock films are classic and don't show the blood and guts, but the suspense. Usually, in the slasher movies, its always the blonde that gets killed.

Well, upon surfing youtube recently, I came across a trailer, and subsequently this New York Asian Film Festival entry simply called, "The Butcher." The way I see this (trailer), it's basically a kimchi-flavored version of Hostel and/or Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with a bit of REC, the subsequent "remake," Quarantine, Cloverfield, and possibly Cannibal Holocaust thrown in, meaning the whole, cinema verite, mockumentary format... or shall I say, "shmockumentary!"

And not surprisingly, there's the usual "social commentary," "political themes" allegedly expressed in The Butcher--probably no different from Eli Roth's *cough cough* thesis behind the Hostel series!*

*though for The Butcher, I think there is some slight sincerity behind the political message, criticizing how the then-burgeoning Korean film industry is in some way, prostitutioning itself to foreign (read: American? European?) fanboy markets--especially those who worshiped Park Chan Wook's Oldboy as if it was Citizen Kane or worse!
