My dad's wife died two years ago. We have her laptop. We hardly used it, but then it stopped working. This was just when I was wanting to use it for dd14yo for school and then poof! no more computer. Not sure what it was doing, as dh was the one using it. He called the company and they said it had an extended warantee. They sent a mailing box, which arrived Thursday the 13th. Dh put the computer in it. They had it picked up the following day; last Friday. It arrived back today. According to the paperwork, it has a new hard drive and is restored to factory specifications. I am thrilled. This computer will be a great help for school. What a blessing.

I always think of Cindy when I have days like today. Sarah did get antsy for her school books and got her work done. She is now working on writing a story in her memory book about the man who is "100% tall". Rebekah also did her schooling and is now working on finger print pictures in her memory book. I need to go help her write her story about them before she goes crazy with it.

Wow Ellie!! Your family makes me feel lazy! You are doing so many creative things!! And, you have the energy to do it, too! Wow! Maybe we should start a post on successful creative homeschool projects and tell how we did them.

I went back over a section in our history for review and this kids seemed to know nothing, so I put in a documentary about the finding of King Tut's tomb. I thought it was very interesting, but apparently Mr. Manly does not.

Cynthia, I am finding that having the kids make a scrapbook page or a design a poster on the computer really helps them to remember stuff. And they always end up doing more research in making them which is nice too.

I hate to say it, but sometimes I get to the review and can not remember everything. I am finding ways to help myself with that, which will help them, too. We do everything orally, all the tests and quizes, if I am able to do them outloud.

She loves to write, so hopefully this will inspire her.

I've discovered that the best way to "test" dd2 is to wait 2 weeks. THe last two weeks were pretty unproductive school-wise. WHen we got back to science she remembered everything we had done a week ago. If you start talking informally with her in the car or something she remember it. ie. we'll be driving down the road and she'll ask me when we are going to go pick out our conifer. However, if we sat at the DR table and I asked her what a conifer was she would panic.

Maybe we should start a post on successful creative homeschool projects and tell how we did them. I will have to remember that as so many times I feel lazy. But really... A lot of the stuff, I don't have much to do with. When it comes to their writing, I am pretty much just an editor. They do it themselves because most of it is their idea. The same with anything that they do with the computers. David or Caleb will probably work with Sarah when she does her thing on making applesauce. Baking and canning are just things that I like to do when I can get the chance. Reading to the kids is our wind down time. We got too tired last night so I promised the older two that we would do an extra bit today. Sometimes I wish that school could be nothing but sitting around reading books to them and having fun exploring and doing projects. They do like their videos a lot though. I will have to blog more stuff that we have been doing lately. I have been going through an emotionally difficult time lately and it feels good to tell about all the fun stuff I enjoy. Sometimes I feel like I am living two lives because I am so happy and love what I am doing, but I have been so depressed too. I think that I am pulling out of it though. A dear friend of mine called yesterday and we talked for hours about just about everything. It was so nice. We really need to get together more often.

LOL. I was ROFLOL at the last line on your blog - that you had to get some school done or your kids would never learn anything. Yet they're builing a chimney, making applesauce, writing, researching . . . Ellie dear, what is it you think your kids are doing???

Ellie-Mae--welcome to my life!!! Okay, please tell me why I even looked....... I bought a motorized pencil sharpener. With four boys, that was my first mistake. Ds2 just attempted to sharpen a eraser-less pencil. He managed to slice his finger open but good. Then, he brings the pencil over and asks me "is that eraser or flesh on the ferrule?" AND I LOOKED!!! Luckily, it was just eraser...

Why, they are having fun of course! I was thinking of a lot of different things while writing that blog. I was laughing at myself for feeling uptight about not getting as much book work done as I would like. I think that a lot of parents feel that way. I was thinking about that thread on Fredding (or unschooling or whatever you want to call it). I was trying to convince myself to just enjoy their learning and not to interrupt and distract them from it.

I got smacked out of that "school must be books" this afternoon when ds2 explained the physics of flinging a spoon vs a pencil. Not a clue HOW ds2 learned it, but he did. On the subject of learning (vs not learning...) ds1 just cut himself doing the EXACT SAME THING AS ds1--sharpening the pencil that has no eraser.

I gave her a bucket though, and I saw her cleaning some things up in her room because I think she missed a little with that! I can not clean up the pukies without getting sick myself, so she is on her own. I sure no one else gets this, especially with Thanksgiving right around the corner. Some people don't get much of a vomit warning I am one of those people, I have a small trashcan that I keep by my bed any time that I feel even slightly nauseated because I don't always make it to the toilet. Gross, I know. But hey, look at the bright side at least she isn't peeing on the carpet at the same time (thank you, post partum bladder)

Annie, didn't anyone ever tell you how to give eye drops to a toddler? 1. Lay toddler on back. Kneel at his head, and get his head between your knees. This will not work if he can throw his head around. 2. Have another person lay across toddler's body if necessary. 3. Put drops into the corner of his eye near his nose. It is not necessary to pry his eyes open. 4. Wait for him to either blink or open his eyes to figure out what you're doing. The drops will roll right in. Remember that if he throws his head around the drops will run down his face, so you have to hold his head until he opens his eyes. 5. If you're comfortable doing so, offer him a small treat for being a good boy. See? Easy peasy! Well... I do it similar. I have him lay in between my legs, his head looking up at me (sort of). I squeeze him with my legs to keep him there with his arms under my legs. Then, I have my hands free to do as I please. Easy Peasy???? I don't know about that. I will try better to get it in the corner by his nose. I was told to hold a tissue there, or pinch right there by his nose so that the drop doesn't go that direction.

Amy, glad the nap helped some. I'm also glad that you're going to call the doctor if it doesn't get better. When I feel like you've described, it often ends up being a sinus infection.

I am roasting a pork loin roast with herbs and potatoes. It smells so good. My two youngest went to a song writing workshop today. They had a lot of fun.
