Do you ever feel guilty when you know you've committed a sin? That is conviction. Have you ever been about to do something, and realize it is a sin? That is a warning from the Holy Spirit. This is just one way that He leads us in to righteousness, but He is available for much more than this. He is also a teacher, teaching us to understand the word of God so that we can receive conviction. He gives us peace when we are tempted so that we can overcome that temptation, which always produces joy when we obey Him.

I'll give you verses, but I am not typing them all out. John 14:16, 26; 15:26; 16:7, 8, 13 John 16:8 specifically states, "and when He has come (Holy Spirit), He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgement." If you take the time to read the epistles of Paul as well, it is mentioned several times in there that He convicts us of sin as well.

I am looking for Scriptural support for the common belief and teaching that God the Holy Spirit convicts Believers of their sins. I appreciate the verses you list, but none address the question. The sin in John 16:8 is specifically addressed to the world, not Believers. If you continue on to John 16:9 it clarifies..."in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me". Peace

If it isn't the Holy Spirit that tells believers when they're sinning, then who or what is it?

Yes, of course. He gives us conviction so we know if we have committed a sin or not.

The HS confirms our obediences in sacrifice/Victory and convicts a redeemed soul's failure to appropriate the same. 8 "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us." I John 1 NOTE.--It must be noted that these words concerning sin, found in verses 8-10, are not addressed to Gentile sinners, but a generation which had grown up in the church. Indeed, of all the epistles, this is the only one which can truly be said to have been addressed to a Christian generation. Hence, it would naturally emphasize, not the unconverted sinner's need of pardon, but of the Christian's constant need of a pardoning Savior. It is the Christian who cannot say that he has no sin, and who must find pardon by confessing his sins to Christ. Acts 2:38 shows how the alien sinner may obtain remission; 1 John 1:9 shows how the Christian, when he sins, may obtain remission. -PNT

1 John 1:9 is the Scriptural support for the Holy Spirit convicting believers of sins? Why should we even need confession if we(as redeemed souls)haven't lapsed into arrogance and failure appropriate His sacrifice/Victory in unbelief? The unrepentant's admission(confession)is unto salvation in Christ Jesus. The repentant's admission(confession)is to restoration of a broken relationship.

This is a manufactured doctrine, I will state that up front. Jesus said: Joh 14:24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me. Joh 14:25 "These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. Joh 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Much of what Jesus taught was on sin. 2 chapters later: Joh 16:8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: Joh 16:13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. If conviction of sin does not come under the heading of "all truth" I am not sure what would. Verse 8 specifically speaks of conviction of sin. In 1 John 1.8 the apostle tells us that if we say we do not sin we lie and the truth is not in us. "All truth." There is NO ONE ELSE scripturally listed as a convictor of sin.

The Holy Spirit does convict of sin, that is singular. The sin of the world is unbelief. I do see Scriptural support for the Holy Spirit convicting Believers of righteousness, but I have yet to see any support for convicting of sins. Still waiting.... Peace

Oh...I have not seen any scripture to the contrary of the workings and convictions of the Holy Spirit. Yes, there is outright obedience to God's word but that doesn't support the Holy Spirit not convicting each of us of our personal "grey" areas.

And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call." -Acts 2:36-38 (emphasis mine)

Oh, and this one too... For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 11See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter - 2 Cor. 7:9b-11 So if it's Godly sorrow we are talking about, then you can only argue about which Person of the Trinity is bringing the sorrow.
