I teach a home bible study with a few couples. This fall we will be discussing who Jesus is and have we tamed down His image too much in America. For the past two years this has been a theme to my teaching, and now the group wants to explore the idea in depth. We will be looking at the four Gospels, the book of Acts and then some contemporary books, including "The Jesus of Suburbia". We are really excited to begin this series and hope for some lively discussions. If it goes well I may have the opportunity to take it to the entire congregation.

quote:

We don't really do sermon series at our church ... I think some feel that a series is too planned and not leaving the door open for the Holy Spirit to work through the preacher if it is planned in advance.

Emerald,
I have been a senior pastor for two and a half years now, and pastor a Spirit-filled (Foursquare) congregation. We are equally passionate about the preaching of the Word, and the moving of the Spirit. And although I don't always preach in series', I don't believe that preaching in a series necessarily negates the Spirit's freedom and work. If we really believe that the Word of God is inspired (God-breathed), living and powerful, then by preaching the Word, we are giving the Holy Spirit something to quicken in the hearts of our hearers. For example, for the past nine weeks, we have been going through a series in THE BOOK OF ACTS: "Supernatural: Contending for Signs and Wonders Today." We have looked at Acts not just as history, but as our blueprint for the church today, and as I have been preaching chapter by chapter, we have still seen God move in saving people, healing and delivering people.

To the original poster of this thread, here is a LINK to my sermons page on www.sermoncentral.com. I post my weekly sermons there, and I find its a great place to see what other preachers and teachers of God's Word are saying to the church today... check it out!

This past Sunday, we went through Acts 9:1-6 and looked at the conversion of Saul, and my big idea was:
The two greatest questions that we can ask to discover our destinies are: #1, who are you, Lord? and #2, what do you want me to do? Knowing God and doing His will.

Bless all of you who are called to preach and teach God's Word!

Thanks to everyone for keeping this topic going. I'm hoping to see that continue as the more posts we get, the more ideas and possible insight we can get to help us with further sermons.

This next week, I"m going to be preaching a sermon based on Jesus calling Peter to be one of his disciples.

Jesus approached Peter having never met him before and said in John 1:42 "You are Simon son of John, you will be called Peter" (which we all know means Rock).

Anyway, the point of the whole message is GOD SEES IN US, WHAT WE CAN'T SEE IN OURSELVES".

Jesus called Peter a rock, well before Peter was anything close to a Rock. Peter had several years of mistakes and problems ahead of him before he would see the risen Christ and truly become a rock. Yet Jesus called him anyway. Knowing how he would fail.

The take away is that no matter our short comings and failures, that God sees in us what we can't see in ourselves and He wants to use us in ways that we will never be able to grasp. He wants to use us in powerful ways and we need to get ourselves out of the way and let God do what He does.

I'm starting a three part series this sunday entitled, "Ever-increasing grace."

Part one is an exposition of Romans 5:18-21. Verse 20 is the theme verse of the entire series. Also reading Philippians 2:8 in part one.

Part two of the series deals with Manasseh, the wicked king of Judah. Theme verse is still Romans 5:20, plus reading the life of Manasseh in 2 Chronicles 33:1-20 and 2 Kings 21. Ending this sermon with a quick exposition of 1 Timothy 1:12-16.

Part three deals with the exiles of Judah. Again, Theme verse is Romans 5:20. Primary verses used concerning the Jewish exiles will be Isaiah 40:1-11. Additional Scriptures used will be: Jeremiah 29:10-14, Jonah 4:2, Romans 2:4, 1 Peter 1:22-25, 1 John 3:8, and 1 John 5:1-5.

I like to preach in series to be more focused on the thought I'm trying to present from the Scriptures. Sometimes I will use many Scriptures, as is the case on the third sermon to state my argument...sometimes not.

This series came to me as I was reading through my morning devotions. I am reading the Bible through Chronilogically this year (and truly enjoying it). It is the first time I read the passages in kings and chronicles together considering Manasseh. It got me on a quest that day...and out came these three sermons basically. Still working on 2 and 3, but what I posted is basically the verses I will use.

I have been speaking on The Prodigal Son the past few weeks and this will be the third. Of all things, I trust it is Holy Spirit led.

The first week was Wandering In The Desert, the second was Being A Servant and this week will be, Seeing and Perceiving. All three talks hinge on the 17th verse, "But when he came to himself-".

I also like to speak in series so I can repeat and recap the previous week to emphasize the key part without seeming repetitious.

One thing I've noticed in the last 15 years of listening to Christian radio stations (26-year believer), is that 3 times out of 4, or maybe 4 out of 5, the message and text is the same on COMPLETELY un-associated radio programs and stations, in whatever church I'm attending, and for a few years even while attending 2 different churches. Sometimes the similar message is 1 week removed before or after the first instance of the message, but it has always confirmed to me that the ministry leader, or the pastor, is 'in tune' with the Holy Spirit, and that HS is the inspiration for the message.

Just another example of the proof of God's existence, in my opinion...

This Sunday I'm giving our pastor a break by preaching on Matthew 9:36-10:8, breaking the passage down with a general "Look, Pray, and Go". In other words, first receive Jesus' vision of the people (9:36-37), then pray for workers (9:38), then become the answer to prayer by going as He directs and with His power and authority (10:1ff).

I plan to spend more time on the importance of seeing people as Jesus sees them because it is an important preliminary to praying and going. We tend to skip it and go right on to the "pray" and "go" phases. I'm doing this by introducing the message with a reading of chapter 9, showing how Jesus sees the people in a completely different way than we do. We need to have the same love and compassion for people that Jesus had before we go, otherwise we'll have the "hired worker" mentality. (I've had this message on the back-burner for a few years, and had previously written this from my meditation on chapter 9, which I plan on using in the message in some form.)

When Jesus describes the people as harrassed and scattered sheep, I'll take a side-trip to Ezekiel 34 to show how they got that way, and how Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecied good shepherd in 34:23-24.

CWB,

I've also noticed the similarities that you mentioned. Especially odd, or not considering the wonders of God, since many might begin preparing their talk a week or two ahead of time.

I'm continuing to speak on being a servant this Sunday beginning with the passage in Mark 10:35 and Matthew 20:20, where either the sons of Zebedee, James and John, or their mother, came to Him saying, "Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and one on your left, in Your kingdom."

Jesus pulls them aside and explains to them the difference in the way the world works and how we are expected to be when we are called to serve him.

James and John are looking at being lords and leaders over people because they were amazed at the crowd before, and following Jesus. They wanted to be big men in the kingdom. There are many today who strive to be the big man, the leader, the great speaker and teacher for Christ. There seems to be less and less humility. We all think we have the answers for a hurting world. And we do but often we deliver that message in our own pride rather than as humble servants of Christ. Many times it is prefaced with, author, teacher, pastor so and so, or Dr. of Theology so and so. We actually think we are great theologians.

Jesus is talking about being servants and slaves. Jesus said to sit in the back of the room and wait to be called forward, rather than being embarrassed by sitting in the front and being asked to move for someone more important than you.

Well this is part of where the Spirit is leading me.

Matthew 27:54 "Truly this was the Son of God..." focus on the word was. After all that was witnessed and felt, only after Christ death did he say these words. The Gospel is going out to the world through pulpits, radio, tv, and printed word, yet those will be standing when it is too late and know that "Truly this was the Son of God" remember me in your prayers.

I was wanting to 'ressurect" this thread in hopes that some of you got some new ideas to share.

ALSO, what are you all planning on preaching on this Easter? Anyone planning on starting a new series that week?

Share your ideas everyone.

I'm guest-preaching on the 28th a non-Palm-Sunday related message about appreciating grace. Beginning with God's grace in the O.T., and especially comparing Israel before the Law vs. under the Law (i.e. in Exodus through Deuteronomy when they sinned they always received grace instead of justice until the covenant of Law when they always received severe punishment.) From there going into Galatians 3 (esp. vss 10-26).

I conducting a "Survey" series. Where I started in the book of Ruth and chronologically summarized the Old Testament. Then I shifted through the Inter-testament period and now I am staring the NT in Chronological order.

This is assist my students in gathering a "context" of redemptive history rather than a bunch of "cut and paste" stories.

It has REALLY helped me grow - that is for SURE.

Sunday I am finishing a 10 week series on Joseph out of Genesis 39-40 emphasising the test that we must go through to accomplish the dreams (Goals) that God has given us, and how each test builds character, patience, and Faith.

Next week I start on a three part series starting with Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem, then the Passion of Christ, and on Easter an uplifting resurrction message (Concerning Christ reaching out for Peter, by telling Mary to "Go tell Peter" as a sign of God's Grace, forgivess, and love).

Thanks
RC

On Sunday mornings i am preaching through the book of Romans right now. Last year in 09 we covered chapter one. I started chapter two in January and just finished verse three this morning.

On Sunday evenings I am preaching topically on the role of deacons and pastors right now as I do my topical preaching in the evenings.

I've been speaking about the bride of Christ the past several weeks using the book of Ruth as a picture of us being prepared by Him as His bride.

Yesterday I spoke on being redeemed by the blood of Christ just as Ruth was redeemed by Boaz. Rev. 5:9, Ephesians 1:7, Hebrews 9:14, Galations 1:4, and Titus 2:14

This coming week will be about the change in Ruth when she is redeemed, from a dead past, to a living present, and a glorious future and that being the picture of what happens to us when we accept Christ as our Savior.

Last Sunday, I preached a message on "Defeating Discouragement, Depression and Loneliness" based on the story of Elijah in 1 Kings 19.

This coming week, Palm Sunday, I am preaching a message on... Palm Sunday of course - the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem at the beginning of the passion week. I am going to focus on the scene where Jesus cleans out the temple, and am calling the message: "Extreme Temple Makeover: Heart Edition." In preparation for Easter / Resurrection Sunday, we are going to talk about preparing our hearts, and allowing Jesus to 'clean house' so to speak, and make our hearts His home. Then of course, Good Friday will be "Christ's Words from the Cross" and Resurrection Sunday will be a message on the Power of the Resurrection.
