ORIGINAL: TMeeks I grew up near Occoquan, Virginia, about 30 miles from Washington, DC. Back then it was a tiny little backwater town that was a bit run down . But, times change. Now it is Historic Occoquan, a tourist and shopping mecca. My sister and I got together for dinner and then walked through the town for some photos. I particularly enjoyed the Golden Goose, a Christmas Shop. But, I was VERY happy that my wife wasn't with us or I'd have been carrying around a lot of bags instead of a camera! http://www.flickr.com/photos/27657433@N08/sets/72157622077215551/ Some lovely photos there! Living here in Portsmouth UK its mainly ships and boats but I often venture inland to some quaint thatched villages, because the roads are so narrow its difficult to park up and stop for photos or even painting/sketching. As you can imagine taking photos of naval ships gets cautious looks from various people. Hopefully I am going to make a 'light box' so that I can practise macro, wish me luck! We women do tend to give men a hard time when in shopping mode. I will! One of my FAVORITE photographers is Jono Slack, of the UK. Here is one of his award winning images.

ORIGINAL: SnapperBug Ive been photographing for about 9 years now. I didnt really have an interest in photography until I went to Creation 2000 in PA, and I had 3d glasses for some odd reason and I thought I would experiment with my disposable camera and the red and blue "filters", that started it all. :) I eventually got this really "great" 3mp 6x optical digital camera that I was happy with until I took a photography class, and the lack of manual options left me dissatisfied with it. :) Ive since started my own photography business, but right now business is kind of slow. Gotta work on that marketing. :) I like photographing all sorts of things, but action shots are what I like the most. I like the challenge of capturing the moment. I love playing around with 3D. But, the REAL master of it is "LordV", Brian Valentine. Not only is he a wonderful photographer; but, a genuinely nice and helpful guy.

Do you mean 3d as in taking 2 images and merging them together to use with 3d glasses? Or do you mean something else? : ) Ive been interested in doing 3d pictures, just havent gotten around to it. It would be nice if you could buy a trigger for a camera that plugs into 2 camera's at once, but then that doesnt solve the focus issue.

What Brian Valentine does is to to take an image and move slightly to the side and snap a second image. He then creates a single image having the first picture on one side and the second picture right beside it. Most people are able to relax their focus enough for the composite 3D image to pop into place. But, some never see them. If one IS able to see the image in 3D it really pops out at you. Here is a sample of one of his images. Relax your eyes and begin to focus between the images, slightly crossing your eyes. This one is REALLY remarkable. I have a gizmo that I have never used that allows the camera to slide from side to side. Some day, when I get some time I'll try it out.

Sorry, haven't been here in a while! Went to Oregon recently. There I shot the Orion constellation. Single shot, 2 second exposure, Sigma 30mm f/1.4 http://yoderdev.com/photos/090927-Orion.jpg And a nice volcano reflecting in a lake. Also using the Sigma 30mm. I love that thing! http://yoderdev.com/photos/LakeMountainClouds.jpg Those are my favorites, there are others. Photo ministry still slow to get started, but the "Urban Connection" ministry my church works with, which helps people in a very poor area get on their feet, has expressed interest in us taking Christmas photos of their people. So I plan to be all over that! The crisis pregnancy center that we also work with wants some website photos. Personal photos might come later.

Wow....not much activity in this thread lately eh? I'm excited, my new camera should be here this Wednesday. I ordered a Canon 7D. Can't wait to start playing with it.

Sweet. I am looking forward to the 7D's successor, whatever and whenever that is. Hope to be able to purchase it shortly after launch. Why not 7D? For one, I don't *need* it *now*. But I do hope to be able to use the same camera for video and stills, and I feel that if I wait a while, SLR video technology will significantly improve.

Well, I almost bought the 5D mark ii, but I just couldn't justify the extra $1000 for it. Maybe in a few years. I did want a full frame, but I'll make do for now. The 7D and 5D are capable of some pretty awesome video....Here is a site that showcases 5D videos.

Apparently the new 550D (T2i) has pretty much the same video capabilities of the 7D. That *might* change my mind unless I can justify the 7D's cost for still photos. And I probably don't *need* its added features. But yes, I have a friend who is getting started in a pro video career. He has always talked to me about $5000+ video camera systems that he wants to buy. When the 7D came out he told me that should be good enough for him! But he would need additional sound equipment. Full frame -- not sure if I see the point. If it's for ultrawide angle, I have a Canon 10-22 that does pretty well for that.

Yes, I figure once I start playing with the video, I'll probably want to buy an external mic for it. I know why the enthusiasts are big on full-frame, but I'm not quite sure about it myself. I mean, if I'm the only one who knows it's full frame (or even what it means), who (client wise....brides or people wanting portraits) is going to care? If the shot is good, it's good - right?

Some 7D test shots.....I'm still learning the ins and outs. Lots of customizable features and such, but I'm getting the hang of it. Haven't tried any video yet.

Those do look pretty good! Of course I think the lens make the photo more than the camera body. Which lenses do you use with it? I'm getting ready to get a couple more external flashes, which I hope to use both for portraits and real estate photography. I already have a Canon 580 EX II. Was debating between: * Canon flashes to use E-TTL throughout. Ease of use would be good but would have some limitations for real estate, since slaves normally need to be line of sight. I take it that slaves can be hidden behind furniture as long as the room isn't too big or the walls too dark. I just don't know how well that will work in practice. * Optical slaves. Might work good enough but would take a lot of trial and error to get the exposure right. * Radio controlled slaves, either with cheap Chinese systems or the expensive PocketWizard, which is supposedly the absolute best way to do it if you can afford it. Probably would still require trial and error. At this point I'm leaning towards getting one used 550EX on eBay and one new 430EX II from B&H. I guess they can both work as slaves to mine, and when I get the successor to the 7D, I could get all of them off-camera. Speaking of new cameras ... I recently announced a new project I'm working on (see sig). I know I will need SLR video for this -- I don't think any SD videocam will cut it in today's world. (I hoped to use my GS500 for it, but I've been thinking about it for years and now I think SD's usefulness is done.) So at some point before actual shooting begins I'll be getting either a T2i, or possibly a 60D if it's out by then and has the same stuff. Still plan to then get the 7D's successor if I can justify it! Having two SLR video-capable cameras will be nice for film making.

The T2i is sweet. I wouldn't mind having it as a backup camera. The lens I'm using is the same one I used on the XTi...the Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens...for the close-up weed shots, I used a Quantary 300mm zoom. Have to use a tripod with that lens.

Still plan to then get the 7D's successor if I can justify it! Having two SLR video-capable cameras will be nice for film making. I shot professional video for many years in the early dark ages (1969-1980) and I find the ergonometrics of using the 5DMKII for video to be very confining. Yet, the video image, when you get it right, is phenominal. To me, it's a good niche video camera. An associate looked at using the 5DMKII for a new video project and opted instead to purchase a JVC Hi-Def video camera as his primary camera and use my 5DMKII for special shots. And, I think that is a wise strategy. It does require VERY expensive memory to capture the video right with any of the cameras. I see skipped frames all the time in those video clips where people rave about the quality. And, I am pretty sure that my own videos have some dropped and replaced frames. You see it most in horizontal moves. But, that could be the computer rather than the video itself.

WOW! You DEFINITELY live on the sunny side of the street! The flowers are amazing! We barely have any color here yet. Are you shooting in RAW? If not, you should begin to experiment with it. Canon's Digital Photo Professional is a wonderful tool and you will be amazed at what you can do with a RAW image if you aren't already working with them. Be sure to download the latest of everything from the Canon site after installing from your CD.

I haven't yet. I don't know why, but RAW files intimidate me. I haven't had a program I'm familiar enough with that will open them, and I haven't installed Canon Digital Photo Professional yet. I may try it this weekend if I get some extra time.
